Chosen as best beer in the world according Ratebeer and Beeradvocates audience rated an overall score 100 points which is remarkable. Flavors going from butterscotch and coffee to figs nuts caramel and apple. The Westvleteren 12 pours dark brown with tan head with lively carbonation as most of the Belgium beers have. Even if this Trappist is hard to find outside Belgium there are over 3400 ratings on Ratebeer alone. Most of them tasted the beer in a local beercafé or on a trip to Europe. It’s popularity has arise in 2011 when the monks decided to sell the Westvleteren 12 once outside the abbey walls and exported limited quantities to France, Switzerland, the Netherlands , Spain and Italy were it was a huge success and lots of people waiting in long rows to get their favorite six pack of beer. For this event the monks had packed their beer in a carton brick with 2 small tasting glasses, both the glasses and the bottles were labeled with gold plated XII symbol. Normally the bottles have no label whatsoever, u can only tell by the color of the cap which of the 3 Westvleteren varieties you have. You have the Westvleteren 12 obviously and the two brothers, the Westvleteren 8 and the Westvleteren blond. The blond and the 8 are not so famous due to the popularity of the twelve but als gets good ratings on several beer rating websites like ratebeer.
Turning point for many people is the price, because of the scarcity the price of Westvleteren 12 is mostly on the high side and specially in countries where you can’t find the beer that easy. I think all beer lovers should at least have a taste once in their lifetime to judge about it’s flavors and the nomination of best beer in the world. Some stated that the Sint Bernardus 12 has same taste and flavor but u have to judge that for yourself. There are some pretty good alternatives for the Westvleteren 12 like the Rochefort 10 and the dutch trappist La Trappe which have also a nice quadruple in it’s assortment.
