The Westvleteren 12 or Westy as some connoisseurs say is together with other 11 Trappist beers the only true Trappist in the world and has rated multiple times as best beer in the world according Ratebeer and Beeradvocate. Already in 2002 the Westvleteren brewery was chosen “best brewer in the world” before the hype has started. They started brewing in 1839 and the recipe has changed slightly since then.
This Trappist beer is well know all over the world and therefor very exquisite due to it’s limited production at the Sint Sixtus Abbey in Westvleteren. Production around 4000 barrels a year therefore they produce the least of all Trappist brewery’s.
The beer is hard to get even when you are in Belgium because the brothers use a beer phone to select their buyers. First of all you have to try to get in which can be a difficult task and can take weeks before you can get in if your lucky. Up to 85000 calls are made per hour and only 200 will be served in 2-3 hour window. Every 60 days you can use the same phone number and license plate by pickup for 2 cases maximum otherwise your rejected anyway.
The regular bottles Westvleteren have no labeling except for the limited Westvleteren boxes that were issued once in 2011 with the renovation of the Abbey. Limited boxes were sold by Colruyt in Belgium and 7760 boxes were distributed by Shelton Brother in US. Those bottles are marked with gold plated XII print. It’s possible to distinguish the 3 different Westvleteren brews by the color of the cap, Westvleteren 12 has a gold colored cap, Westvleteren 8 has a bleu colored cap and finally the Westvleteren blond has a green colored cap.
Westvleteren 12 is a strong dark ale with 10.2% alc and has some flavors of chocolate, brown sugar, apple, figs and pours a tan creamy head. A great full classic quadruple which everyone who loves beer has to taste once in their lives.
